History

The West Coast Canadian Australian Football Club, also known as the West Coast Saints, began their life in 2008. The club was born after an expansion of the Vancouver Cougars. For the 2008 season, the newly formed Saints trained with the Cougars. This gave both old, and new players, a place to train, under the watchful, and helpful eyes of the experienced Cougars players and coaches.

2009: A New Team
In 2009, the Saints took on a new look. They were no longer under the umbrella of the Cougars. As a result of the decision to go solo, the club underwent a major face lift. A new committee was appointed, and as per the rules of the agreed constitution, the committee must be voted in at the end of each season. Once the founding committee was voted in, they began to build a new Australian Rules Football Club in Vancouver.

The Logos
With a new team came a new logo. It encompassed a bit of old, and a bit of new. The old Saint was kept, in honour of the Saints beginnings as a club. A halo was placed over the Saints head, giving it more of a Saintly feeling. The wings were given a bit of a touch up, giving them a more rough and rugged look. Finally, the Saint was given an axe to carry in his right hand. The axe signifies BC’s beginnings, as a logging community born through hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. This logo became the main logo, and its identity.

A second logo was designed from scratch. This logo has the acronym WCS, the West Coast Saints. The axe was laid over the top, once again, showing the significance of BC and the hard work the axe stands for. The halo was added as a final touch, reminding people that the team is the Saints, an important part of the clubs identity. The logo became the symbol of the club, showing strength and pride. It also became the official logo for the club.

The Uniform
The uniform is an exciting representation of the club. The uniform design of 2008, being the vertical red, white and black stripes, was moved aside, however the colours were kept. The logo on the front of the jumper is the clubs official logo. White shorts are worn, along with hooped red, white and black socks.

The Committee
In 2008, a new committee was voted in to lead the club into a new era. 10 members were chosen coming from a diverse range of backgrounds, not all of them football. The committee took on the responsibility of building and directing the club. Each home game organised by the Saints was managed by the committee. The following people were voted to the inaugural committee:

President: Michael Rawlings
Vice President: Wade Atterton
Treasurer: Scott Sheen
Secretary: Clayton Holmes
Operations Director: Ward Frost
Marketing Director: Jake Benson
Social Manager: J’Anna Aitchison
Web Site Director: David Miller
General Members: Ben Scott, Peter Campion

Saints Members and Volunteers
Since the beginning, the Saints have had a loyal group of members and volunteers. From managing the BBQ’s at games, running water to the players during games, to supporting the players both on and off the field, the team on the sidelines has been key to the clubs success. Their money and time commitment to the club has kept the strong momentum going forward, building a strong base for the seasons to come.
